First Time in Dubai? 8 Things You Should Do on Your First Visit

Dubai is a destination where tradition and modern life come together. From record-breaking skyscrapers and beautiful beaches to traditional markets and desert landscapes, there is something for every kind of traveller. If you're planning your first trip to Dubai, deciding where to begin can feel overwhelming because there are so many places to explore. Whether you're visiting for a few days or planning a longer holiday, here are eight experiences I would recommend adding to your first Dubai itinerary. 1. See Dubai From the Top of Burj Khalifa No first trip to Dubai feels complete without seeing the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. Standing at 828 metres, this architectural landmark is one of the city's most recognizable attractions. For an unforgettable experience, visit its observation decks on the 124th and 125th floors. You'll get panoramic views of Dubai's skyline, coastline, and surrounding desert. If possible, plan your visit around sunset to see the city transform from daylight into a sparkling evening landscape. Remember to book your tickets ahead of time, especially if you want a popular viewing slot. 2. Explore Dubai Mall Right beside Burj Khalifa is Dubai Mall, a destination that offers much more than shopping. You can spend hours exploring its stores, restaurants, entertainment attractions, and indoor experiences. Visit the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, enjoy the impressive architecture, or simply take a break at one of the many cafés. Even if shopping isn't your priority, the mall is worth exploring because of how much it has to offer. Make sure to leave enough time for the surrounding Downtown Dubai attractions, too. 3. Watch the Dubai Fountain Show After exploring Dubai Mall, head outside to see the Dubai Fountain. Set against the backdrop of Burj Khalifa, the fountain features choreographed water performances accompanied by music and lights. It's one of those experiences that makes an evening in Downtown Dubai memorable. Find a comfortable viewing spot along the waterfront, enjoy the atmosphere, and take in the spectacular skyline. It's also a great opportunity to capture some beautiful travel photos. 4. Discover Old Dubai at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood Dubai isn't only about luxury shopping and modern architecture. To understand more about the city's history, spend time exploring Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Walk through its narrow lanes, admire traditional architecture, discover cultural spaces, and visit local art galleries. The neighbourhood offers a different perspective on Dubai and its development over the years. Take your time exploring the area, and stop at a traditional café to enjoy Arabic coffee or local refreshments. 5. Ride an Abra Across Dubai Creek and Visit the Souks For a more traditional Dubai experience, take an abra, a wooden boat that crosses Dubai Creek. The ride connects the historic districts of Bur Dubai and Deira and offers a glimpse of the city's older trading routes. After crossing the creek, explore the Gold Souk and Spice Souk. You'll find jewellery, colourful spices, fragrances, souvenirs, and traditional goods. It's a fun way to experience a side of Dubai that feels very different from its modern shopping malls. Don't be afraid to negotiate when shopping in traditional markets. 6. Experience a Desert Safari One of the most memorable experiences to add to your Dubai trip is a desert safari. Leave the city behind and discover the beauty of the Arabian Desert. Depending on the package you choose, activities may include dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding, and sunset photography. Some evening experiences also include traditional entertainment and dinner at a desert camp. If you're looking for something different from the usual city attractions, this is an experience worth considering. Choose a reputable tour operator and check exactly what's included before booking. 7. Relax at Jumeirah Beach and See Burj Al Arab After exploring the city, take some time to enjoy Dubai's coastline. Jumeirah Beach is a lovely place to relax, enjoy the sea, and take photographs with the famous Burj Al Arab in the background. You can also explore nearby beachfront areas, enjoy a meal by the water, or simply watch the sunset. For another lively beach atmosphere, consider visiting Kite Beach, known for its waterfront setting and food options. Remember to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfortable beachwear. 8. Explore Palm Jumeirah Finish your first-time Dubai experience with a visit to Palm Jumeirah, the famous palm-shaped island. The island is home to luxury hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, and attractions. One highlight is The View at The Palm, an observation deck offering panoramic views of the island and the surrounding coastline. You can also explore the waterfront, enjoy a meal, or spend an afternoon discovering the island's attractions. It's a great place to appreciate another side of Dubai's ambitious architecture and lifestyle. How Many Days Do You Need in Dubai? For a first visit, I would recommend spending around four to five days in Dubai if you want to experience the main highlights without rushing. You can dedicate one day to Downtown Dubai, including Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and the fountain. Spend another day discovering Old Dubai, Al Fahidi, Dubai Creek, and the traditional souks. Set aside a day for a desert safari, then use the remaining time to explore Jumeirah Beach, Palm Jumeirah, and other attractions that interest you. If you have more time, you can add museums, theme parks, restaurants, and day trips outside the city. First-Time Dubai Travel Tips Before travelling, check the UAE entry and visa requirements that apply to your passport. Requirements can differ depending on nationality, so confirm them before booking your trip. Plan your transportation in advance. Dubai Metro is useful for reaching several major attractions, while taxis and ride-hailing services can help you reach places farther from metro stations. Consider getting a Nol card for public transportation. Dress respectfully, particularly when visiting cultural and religious places. Comfortable walking shoes are also essential because some attractions and shopping areas are much larger than they appear. Finally, remember that Dubai can get extremely hot, especially during summer. Plan outdoor activities around the weather and stay hydrated throughout the day. Final Thoughts: Make Your First Dubai Trip Count! Dubai is a destination that offers a little bit of everything. You can spend the morning exploring historic neighbourhoods, the afternoon admiring incredible architecture, and the evening enjoying the desert or the city's waterfront. For first-time visitors, my biggest recommendation is not to focus only on the famous landmarks. Make time for the cultural experiences, local markets, and everyday moments that give you a better appreciation of the destination. Whether you're travelling solo, with friends, or with family, Dubai is a city worth exploring. What would you visit first in Dubai: the world's tallest building, the traditional souks, or the Arabian Desert?
